AXOLOTL

From sky to seafloor observation: Achieving eXcellence in Oceanic surveiLlance and cOnservation Through deep Learning

AXOLOTL overview

The AXOLOTL project aims to enhance the capacity of the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) in advanced research by fostering collaboration with leading institutions from France and Belgium. Through a range of capacity-building, knowledge transfer, and networking activities, the project seeks to strengthen competencies in biodiversity assessment and maritime surveillance using cutting-edge deep learning methodologies. In addition to its scientific objectives, the initiative will support the development of administrative, dissemination, and entrepreneurial skills, fostering sustainable partnerships and access to networks of excellence. The research component will focus on improving data quality, standardization, and synchronization, developing innovative methodologies, and validating solutions in real-world applications.

36

Months

AXOLOTL is a 3-year long EU-funded Coordination and Support Action that started on 1st September 2024.

2

Phases

AXOLOTL will be executed over 2 phases.

3

Beneficiaries

The project brings together a research institution from a Widening country, Cyprus, which serves as the project coordinator, with top-class leading counterparts at the EU Level Universite De Bretagne Sud (France) and Vlaams Instituut Voor De Zee (Belgium).

Objectives

1

To implement capacity-building and knowledge transfer activities to strengthen CMMI’s Research & Innovation capacity and skills in the interdisciplinary fields of:

  • Deep Learning-enhanced in-situ biodiversity assessment, and
  • Deep Learning-enhanced remote sensing for maritime surveillance.

2

To realize a Research & Innovation project that utilizes advanced Deep Learning techniques to enhance the visual identification of species from Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures plate images and improve the monitoring of specific maritime traffic from remote sensing data.

3

To implement networking activities to raise the reputation, research profile and attractiveness of CMMI and enable all partners to improve outreach to an international level.

4

To maximize the project’s impact through wide dissemination, communication, exploitation, and ocean literacy activities.
